The Olympian
This project involved designing a new building addition and renovating portions of the existing Olympian newspaper building. The new addition (14,000 SF) consists of a two-story portion with the lower floor housing the circulation department and the main floor housing the news room and publisher's suite. Primary framing consisted of eccentrically braced steel frames and 14' high concrete retaining walls. The lower floor is concrete slab-on-grade and the main floor utilizes composite steel beams under metal decking and concrete floor toppings. The roof utilizes steel bar joist and metal decking. All the perimeter steel framing is hidden inside the exterior walls with windows customized around braces. The new addition also includes a single-story circular-shaped customer service and community room area with an in-board circular-shaped clerestory above. Primary framing is hollow steel tube frames with much of the framing left exposed for aesthetic purposes. The foundation for this area is composed of 14' deep concrete drilled piers and concrete spread footings. The new addition areas are seismically separated from the existing building.
